We welcome potential customers and visitors to the Women of Kireka’s office on the Kireka Quarry in Kampala, Uganda.
What You Will See:
During your visit, the women will show you the quarry, their jewelry and will demonstrate how they make the beads. Count on about 1 hour at the office. It is generally appreciated that visitors purchase one or two items of jewelry as well as cover their visit cost (transport to and fro the quarry). We prefer small groups (2-3) people. The visit will be facilitated by one of our team members.
Transport:
Motorycle – For those accustomed to Kampala’s traffic and enjoy riding the infamous motorcycles, we can take you up in a boda-boda. A boda-boda there and back costs 7 USD. The ride takes about 20 minutes between Kampala’s downtown core and the quarry.
Private Hire Taxi – For those less comfortable on motorcycles, we can rent a private hire (taxi) to take you up to the quarry. This option is a bit more expensive (approximately 15 USD).
Matatu/Public Transport: For old hands, you can take a matatu back and forth from the quarry (2 USD). You can find a matutu at the new Taxi Park in Kampala and ask for the ride heading towards Jokas.
Unfortunately, we do not facilitate food, water (bring lots, it gets dusty!) or transport. Kindly respect the environment you are in and keep photographs to a minimum. Please do not handout donations, as purchases are preferred.
If you are interested in visiting the quarry please call +256-705-275132 or 256-792-124340 or email Siena (siena.anstis@gmail.com) or Teddy (teddy@tmsruge.com) to arrange a trip.
